What to Expect During a Therapy Session
If you've never been to speech therapy, you might imagine a quiet, structured lesson at a table. In reality, sessions at Play. Learn. Progress. are active, engaging, and built around your child’s natural interests and daily life.
It Looks Like Play
For young children, play is their "work." I get on the floor. I play with cars, dolls, and puzzles. But while we are playing, I am constantly modeling language, setting up opportunities for your child to request items, and targeting specific speech sounds. To the untrained eye, it looks like fun (and it is!), but it is highly structured therapeutic intervention.
You Are Involved
I operate on a parent-coaching model. This means you aren't just sitting in the waiting room (or the other room, since I am in your home!). You are often right there with me. I will demonstrate a strategy—like "parallel talk" or "expansion"—and then have you try it with your child.
Routine-Based Intervention
Since I am in your home, I can work on communication during real-life moments. Snack time, washing hands, or getting dressed are perfect opportunities to build language. I show you how to turn these daily routines into language-rich learning moments.
Ultimately, my goal is to equip you with the skills to be your child's best therapist during the 167 hours a week I'm not there.
Staying Connected When Sessions Are at Daycare
When I see your child at daycare instead of in your home, you are still a vital part of the therapy process. After each session, I provide clear updates about what we worked on, how your child did, and ways you can support progress at home.
Depending on your preference, this may include brief written summaries, secure messages, or in-person check-ins. I am always available to answer questions and collaborate with you and your child’s teachers to make sure everyone is working toward the same goals.
My goal is to make sure you never feel “out of the loop,” even when you’re not physically present during the session.
